Big oil comes to Brazil

Big oil comes to BrazilThere has been an oil industry in Brazil for some years now, but it is only recently that the oil majors and companies outside South America have sat up and taken notice. Huge amounts of the black gold have been found in the deep, deepwater off the coast of Brazil, and state oil company Petrobras is making sure that it and the Brazilian government don’t get taken for a ride by these smooth operators, as has already happened to many leaders in West Africa.
All of a sudden, a country that was considered too poor and backwards to be worth investing in is hosting international conferences and welcoming the big cheeses of several major oil companies through its doors. The country’s infrastructure has caught up quickly, with new hotels being built to accommodate all these new executives, eager to explore this new market for themselves – and I’m sure that has nothing to do with all the bikini-clad girls on Copacabana beach!
Doing business in South America comes with a whole new set of challenges, not least financial ones. Mobile phone charges from here are among the most expensive in the world, so make sure you have negotiated a flatrate for your global mobile internet access with your service provider before you travel. Parts of the major cities are dangerous to travel around, especially at night, so make sure you heed the advice of those who live there, and don’t decide that midnight would be a good time to go and explore the favelas. Many companies will provide heavy security for their staff, though this really isn’t necessary as long as you take sensible precautions.
